Ever heard of an Instant Pot? It’s the gadget that’s enjoying a huge boom in the US and has finally arrived on our shores.
A cross between a slow cooker and a pressure cooker, the gadget is enjoying a huge spike in popularity for one very big reason - you can make wine in them!
That’s right, a US blogger has worked out an ingenious way to create wine in the gadget using five ingredients.
Spurred on after seeing a Facebook meme which read “Why hasn’t someone figured out how to put grapes in a crockpot and have it turn into wine?”, blogger David Murphy started investigating a way.
And after months of research, the determined Instant Pot master found it.
‘Then, my a-ha moment happened,’ he told Vice. ‘The Instant Pot has a yoghurt function, and you can use less heat. Before you knew it, I was shopping on Amazon and running to the store to grab juice and to test out my theory... and it worked!’
To make his DIY crockpot wine, David used a bizarre combination of Welch’s Grape Juice, a cup of granulated sugar, a packet of Lalvin Red Wine Yeast, clear packing tape, and a funnel. And while the technique is pretty involved and you do need a lot of patience - head here for the full instructions and recipe - it will save you a lot of money in the long run.
And the best part? While you can’t buy Instant Pots in Australia, Philips has brought out a product that’s verrrrrrrry similar called the Philips Viva Collection All-in-One Cooker - you can buy it at the Good Guys here - which means you can whip up wine all day, every day.
