Writes Shell: ‘Went into Woolies tonight at 9.45...15 mins till close. Scanned some reduced to clear rolls at the self serve checkout...the lady says "oh, after 9.30 they are free
‘FREE!! Apparently they do this sometimes when there is a lot of bakery items left, otherwise they get thrown out...its at the managers discretion. I went back and got two bags of rolls and bags of pepperoni pizza rolls...all free! Mega bargain! They are now in my freezer...’
Mega bargain is right! This of course isn’t the first time that we’ve heard of shoppers picking up markdowns at closing time at Woolworths. Last month a bargain hunter revealed how heading into the supermarket at the end of the day landed him a free hot chicken, with the butcher revealing that they give away any leftover chooks at close time.
Woolworths confirmed at the time that markdowns are always at the manager’s discretion.
A Woolworths spokesperson told New Idea Food: ‘Like all retailers, we work hard to minimise our stock loss with better processes in our stores.
‘This is not only the right thing to do, but also good business.
‘To help manage stock levels and reduce food waste, store managers can elect to mark down roast chickens that have been on display for up to four hours.
‘All markdowns are clearly displayed on applicable products.’
