Following on from the success of similar classes in Berlin and California where yogis are sipping from icy cold beers and wine between poses, teacher Cheryl Lowe has brought the practice to Australia with her Wine and Unwind classes.
Working out of Townsville’s Centenary Hotel to comply with licensing laws, Cheryl told the Townsville Bulletin her classes combine a yoga class with mindful drinking in a relaxed, social setting of a pub.
"It’s just nice to be able to be with friends in a social atmosphere where you feel like you are doing something for your body as well," said Cheryl, adding that after the sell-out success of her first two classes she’ll be looking to hold them regularly.
Not a fan of wine? Don’t worry – she also hosts Beer and Bend, a yoga class for those who would prefer a pint to a pinot.
While many people praise alcohol and exercise separately for their power to help us unwind, the effects of alcohol on the body mean you should take extra care when combining the two. Alcohol is a diuretic, so when paired with exercise can cause severe dehydration.
The solution, obviously, is to exercise moderation. Cheers!
